Import documents and migrate a workspace
Import Markdown, Notion ZIPs, and common office documents with a safe rollback path.
Import creates files in the current workspace. Confirm the destination and back up an existing workspace first to avoid overwriting same-name files or asset paths.

Import Markdown
Choose Import Markdown from the file-manager menu to copy Markdown and recognized assets into the current workspace. Afterward, check relative image paths, internal links, and duplicate names.
Import a Notion ZIP
- Export the workspace or pages from Notion as Markdown/CSV and include subpages.
- Keep the original ZIP and do not rearrange its internal folders.
- In NoteGen Files, choose Import Notion.
- Select the ZIP and destination, then wait for completion.
- Sample nested pages, images, attachments, and file names.
Database views, proprietary Notion blocks, permissions, and comments may not convert one-to-one. Keep the original export until migration acceptance is complete.
Convert office documents to Markdown
Document to Markdown supports:
- Word: DOC, DOCX, and DOCM;
- Excel: XLS, XLSX, XLSM, and XLSB;
- PowerPoint: PPT, PPTX, PPTM, PPS, PPSX, PPSM, and POT;
- OpenDocument: ODT, ODS, and ODP;
- RTF, EPUB, CSV, and PDF.
Conversion preserves text and representable structure where possible. Complex layout, comments, animation, formulas, merged cells, and embedded objects may be simplified. A scanned PDF without a text layer requires OCR first.
Switch or migrate a workspace
Switching only changes the directory NoteGen opens; it does not move old files. For a migration:
- Export a full ZIP and disable automatic sync.
- Copy the old workspace with the system file manager, or use the platform's cloud-folder migration action.
- Select the new directory in NoteGen and restart the app.
- Check Markdown, images, recordings, and attachments.
- Rebuild the knowledge-base index and verify sync repository mappings.
Validate and roll back
Compare key folder and file counts, then sample images, links, non-ASCII names, and large documents. Do not delete the old workspace until validation is complete.
If an import fails or is incomplete, stop editing the destination, preserve the error details, switch back or restore the ZIP, and retry in smaller batches.
