Use the web clipper

Install the browser extension and save selected text, images, or the current page to desktop NoteGen.

NoteGen Web Clipper supports Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox. It connects to the running desktop app through the local loopback interface. Mobile and Safari are not currently supported.

Install and connect

In desktop NoteGen, open Settings → Record Settings → Web Clipper.
Enable the web-clipper service.
Select Install, or open the Web Clipper download page.
Install the extension for your browser and keep NoteGen running in the background.
Open the extension popup and confirm that it is connected.

The extension connects to 127.0.0.1:37421 and only accepts a local browser. If it cannot connect, confirm the NoteGen switch and then restart the extension or browser.

Select text on a page and use the quick-save bubble that appears nearby. Text becomes a text record. Selected images are downloaded into NoteGen and handled as separate image records; generated recognition text depends on Image Recognition settings.

If you do not want the quick-save bubble, disable the selection assistant in the extension options. Disabling it unregisters the related content script.

Save the current page

Open the extension popup and save the current page. Its URL enters NoteGen's link-record capture flow, which attempts to collect a title, summary, and available page images. Login requirements, anti-bot controls, and dynamic rendering can limit the result.

Offline queue and limits

When NoteGen is unavailable, the extension retains unsent clips and retries after reconnecting. The queue holds up to 100 items or 50 MiB, and a single Markdown clip is limited to 2 MiB. Start NoteGen and let the queue drain before it reaches the limit.

Privacy

The extension has no account, analytics, cookie collection, or cloud relay.
It reads a selection only after you click Save, and reads the current tab URL only when you save the page.
Clips go only to local NoteGen. Later uploads depend on your recognition model, image-hosting, and sync settings.
HTTP/HTTPS page access is required to display the selection assistant.

Common problems

Disconnected: start desktop NoteGen, enable Web Clipper, and check whether security software blocks the local port.
No selection bubble: refresh the page and confirm the assistant is enabled. Browser-internal and extension-store pages normally block content scripts.
No recognized image text: check OCR/VLM configuration and model availability.
Incomplete page content: save the link first, then add content that is protected by login or dynamic loading manually.
